Native to Central America, Cocobolo is a rare, prized exotic hardwood harvested from several closely related species of the genus Dalbergia. The best known species contributing most of the wood in the trade is Dalbergia retusa, a good-sized tree. Usually orange in color, Cocobolo is quite beautiful and is known to change color after being cut. Uses include inlays, veneers, pens, gun grips, knife handles and guitars. Cocobolo is extremally dense, and even a large block of the wood will produce a clear musical tone if struck. Because of its great beauty and high value, this tree has been heavily exploited and is now in danger of extinction outside of national parks, plantations & reserves. The sawdust from this species can be dangerous, so care must be taken when working this wood.
